Riser/Conductor Protection Nets

TTI is the World's leading authority on the Design and Specification of Riser and Conductor Protection Net Systems.

As an acknowledged leader in the technology of synthetic fibre ropes, TTI offer independent advice, specification and design services for all types of marine applications.

Riser Protection Nets (RPNs) are sometimes necessary to protect vulnerable risers from impact by an errant supply boat. Similarly, Conductor Protection Nets (CPNs) provide protection for vulnerable conductors.

Only fibre ropes have the properties that allow RPNs/CPNs to be successfully engineered, Elastic Modulus being the key property. This allows a net to be designed so that the energy of an impact can be absorbed (through conversion to strain energy) within the strength capability of the ropes.

TTI has engineered some of the world’s highest-capacity impact nets, designed to absorb forces exceeding 20 megajoules (MJ). These systems are built with a design life of up to 40 years, ensuring long-term reliability in the most demanding offshore conditions.

Our rigorous design methodology guarantees consistent net performance throughout its operational life, requiring minimal maintenance and inspection, even under harsh environmental stress.

The accompanying video demonstrates a simulated impact analysis of a supply vessel colliding stern-first with the RPN showcasing the net’s ability to absorb energy and deflect the vessel while maintaining structural integrity.

RPN and CPN systems have been deployed on seventeen major offshore projects, including Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs), Floating Production Systems (FPS), and fixed jacket structures. Notably, TTI has designed all but the first two of these installations—demonstrating our long-standing leadership and expertise in offshore impact protection.

More recently, TTI-designed replacement nets were installed on the Snorre and Heidrun TLPs in Norway, approximately 20 years after the original nets were deployed—a testament to the long-term performance and reliability of our systems in extended offshore service.
