CASE STUDY

IMPACT Project – FEED for Offshore Fish Pen Prototype

Client(s): CEFAS, Seafood Innovation Fund

Consortium: TTI Marine Renewables Ltd (Lead), Impact9, Simply Blue, EMEC, Orwell.

Dates: 2021 - 2022

AIMS

The overall technical objective was to complete the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and mitigate key risks for the design of an  innovative offshore fish pen on behalf of Irish technology owner Impact9. TTI-MR was responsible for project management, management of all sub-contracts, technical leadership and risk management, liaison and reporting to CEFAS.

Approach

The IMPACT project was led by TTI Marine Renewables (TTI), applying their know-how in inflatable structures and design of rope interfacing structures. They were supported by technology owner Impact-9, test site owner EMEC and also blue economy developer Simply Blue, who led on offshore site consenting matters. TTI-MR took ownership of the global analysis and the design of key subsystems and rope interfacing structure.

Key Outcomes and Impact

Inflatable Marine Products for Aquaculture Containment Technology (IMPACT) showed how novel flexible structures and inflatable beam elements could allow aquaculture at more exposed ocean locations. IMPACT projects builds on an earlier feasibility study, which defined a farm system architecture suitable for UK offshore ocean conditions. The IMPACT  project delivered a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) of a sub-scale demonstration salmon production platform, suitable for deployment at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney.

Industry Relevance

Management and delivery of large multi-disciplinary and multi-partner -partner FEED level project. Global analysis driven design to inform design load cases for key subsystems and rope interfacing structures.
